CSU History

Since 1968 Children Safe Uganda has been providing safety to the vulnerable child in Uganda.

The idea for child safety was founded by the late Irene and Christopher Mukasa who was working with Mission for Evangelistic and Social work (MESW).

The founders’ vision was to provide hope to the disadvantaged children who were suffering due to various forms of natural and man-made causes.

The founders’ vision started way back in 1960s when Christopher picked a torn news paper, where he saw a baby being carried by a dog at its mouth! This shocked him yet it was the order of the time especially in the suburbs of Mulago Hospital and Kampala.

Some years later, Christopher was married to Irene and they got a house maid who was expecting a child. After delivering the baby, Irene passed away leaving the new family the child.  Nobody knew who the father of the child was. They tried to consult from the neighbors who directed them to a man they suspected to be responsible for the child, but he denied the responsibility.

Left with nothing to do, Christopher heard a clear voice telling him that “take this baby and nurse him for me and I will pay you” Exodus 2:9.

Christopher and Irene’s work in child care then started; and as time went by, they started getting calls from police, hospitals, among others, asking them to pick abandoned babies to their home.

Though Christopher and Irene had no biological children, God used them to lift the plight of many underprivileged children regardless of ethnicity, tribal or religious affiliation. Over 600 children have passed through CSU and since 1968 and now, the ball is still rolling. Christopher and Irene are both dead, but the organization is moving on with new energetic and youthful managers.

From the time of CSU inception way back in 1968, the situation for children has never changed in Uganda, as they continue to face many challenges that include, sacrifice, torture, neglect, early marriages, besides domestic conflicts, sexual abuse, among others. Child abuse is on the rise coupled with the HIV/Aids scourge that leaves them with no parent, yet many children run away from their homes, due to corporal punishments, torture and threats to be killed. This explains why there is a big number of street children, orphans all over the country. Therefore with the above combination of factors, CSU continues to exist to intervene so as to change the plight of OVCs not only in Uganda, but the world over.
